Gryffindor is one of the four houses at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Anyone who’s seen the films or read the books in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series will know this.
The other three houses at Hogwarts are Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin.
However, all three of the major characters in the series — Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger — are all members of Gryffindor.
So there are many times when it may appear to be the most important house at the school.
Godric Gryffindor was the original founder of the house; he is said to have lived in the 10th century.
He praised courage, boldness and bravery, and these qualities remain highly valued within the house.
Some people — such as Severus Snape, the Head of Slytherin house — have said that these traits can cause members of Griffindor to be reckless and short-tempered, when taken to extremes.
However, they have also brought great renown and glory to the house.
Griffindor’s traditional colours are gold and scarlet, which represent the ferocious flames of fire.
Additionally, the animal associated with the house and its emblem is a lion, a fearsome creature that represents many of the traits associated with the house.
